Your dog was your first baby, and now you’re adding a human baby to the mix. If you’re dreaming of that perfect shot with your furry family member snuggled up next to your newborn, you’re not alone! But you’re probably also wondering: Is it safe? Will my dog cooperate? And how do I make it happen without total chaos?
When Cindy reached out about her newborn session, she mentioned she wanted to include their dog, an important part of their growing family. He was full of energy and definitely kept us on our toes that day! With a little teamwork (and dad holding on), we managed to capture some sweet shots. Proof that even the most spirited pups deserve their moment in front of the camera.
Dreaming of those sweet photos with your newborn and your beloved dog together? You’re not alone! While it might seem tricky to coordinate (hello, wiggly puppy meets sleepy baby!), it’s absolutely doable with a little planning and the right approach. In fact, some of my favorite family photos happen when we include the four-legged family members, the love and connection in those images is just magical.

When pets are part of the family, it’s only natural to want them included in your newborn photos—and I love when families bring their furry friends along! That said, safety always comes first. I personally supervise the entire session and pay close attention to your dog’s temperament and comfort level throughout.
Some older, calm dogs are able to safely snuggle close for those heartwarming, cuddly shots with baby. For younger or more energetic pups, we take a different approach, often having dad hold onto the leash or keeping the dog close by so they’re still included in the photos without being too close to the baby. This way, everyone stays happy, relaxed, and safe, while still capturing those meaningful moments of your whole family together.
If your dog is part of the family, I want them to be part of the session in a way that feels natural. The best thing you can do before I arrive is take them for a walk or let them run around a bit to get that extra energy out. A tired pup is usually a happy, calm one!
When I get to your home, there’s no need to put your dog away. I actually prefer that they stay out so they can see what’s going on and get used to me being there. Locking them up tends to make them more anxious, and I want them to feel comfortable and relaxed.
I’ll take a few minutes to settle in and get a feel for how your dog interacts with everyone. From there, we’ll include them in a few moments that make sense—sometimes that means a cozy shot with baby, and sometimes it’s just having them nearby as part of the family story. Every dog is different, and we’ll work with their personality to make sure they’re comfortable and happy throughout the session.
When it comes to including dogs in newborn photos, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, it really depends on your dog’s size, temperament, and comfort level. Some gentle, older dogs can safely get close to baby for those heart-melting cuddly shots, while younger or more energetic pups might do best sitting nearby with a parent holding them.
Since my sessions are lifestyle-based, there’s no pressure for everything to look “perfect.” What matters most is capturing your family as it truly is, playful moments, loving glances, and even the chaos that comes with pets and little ones. As long as your dog is in the room and part of your story, we’ll be able to get beautiful, meaningful images that reflect real life at home.
When I arrive, I like to take a few minutes to see how everyone, including your pup, is doing before deciding how to start. Sometimes it makes sense to begin with everyone together, and other times we’ll bring the dog in a little later (a treat or two often helps!). Every family, and every pet, is different, and that’s completely okay.
With animals and newborns, you never really know what you’re going to get, but that’s part of the beauty of lifestyle photography. As long as everyone comes in with realistic expectations, stays relaxed, and keeps the dog in the room, we’ll capture something special. It all depends on your dog’s temperament, some will sit sweetly, others might need a little direction, and while I’ll always try to encourage the dog to look my way, the goal is to document your family just as it is in this season.
At the end of the day, including your dog in your newborn session isn’t about perfection, it’s about telling the story of your family as it really is. A little bit of chaos, a lot of love, and the sweet moments in between.
I always take care to make sure everyone, baby, parents, and pups, feels comfortable and safe throughout the session. From reading your dog’s temperament to finding ways to naturally include them in the photos, my goal is to capture those real connections that make your home feel full and complete.
Some of my favorite images are the ones where your dog is simply nearby, watching curiously, resting next to you, or adding that touch of beautiful, real-life energy that only pets bring. These moments are what make your photos uniquely yours.
When you look back on them years from now, I want you to remember how it felt when everyone was together, your baby still tiny, your dog curious and protective, your family finding its new rhythm. Because that’s what it’s all about: embracing the beauty in the real, the unexpected, and the perfectly imperfect moments that tell your family’s story.
